Ratings Tool
What is it for?
Every player has a grade. Some may be provisional if you are new to the club or you haven’t played enough rated games. If you have a grade then you may want to keep a record of your games and also how your grade is fairing with the games you have played. That is why the Excel file is presented here.
[Note: grades can, depending on your nature, cause undue fear and pressure - Chess is Chess: play the board not the opponent! If however you are the type of person who looks forward to thrashing somebody several hundred points above your grade then ask their grade and quote your own only if you know they are above you].
Is it accurate?
Yes I have checked with R. Jones and he has confirmed that the formula is correct but with one caveat: Games are batched in 16. Your grade is re-asessed after 16 games so you should keep separate files after each grading has been assessed (16 games!!). I don’t know how these are synchronised (could be complex or just based on dates??) but the excel file should give you some indication within a few points. Your mileage may vary!
Where do I get it from?
The excel file is available here »
How Do I use it?
When you have opened the file first click on file save: This will give you a local copy that you can use.
Then in:
Column A - enter your opponent’s grade. Col B Enter the result, Col C do nothing, Col D enter Opponent name and competiton, Col E do nothing, Col F do nothing, . . . . . Column L at the top enter your current grade (curently shown as 1398), Column M enter the K-Factor - unless you know about this leave as 15. In row 3 replace the sample game entered with the appropriate details as described above (opponent’s grade, result etc).
After doing the above click (at the bottom of the screen) the new grade tab. The expected new grade is shown on screen.
